Pedagogy Workshop: Teach for Change: Innovating Gender and Women’s Studies

Organized by Gender Studies Programme, The Chinese University of Hong Kong and Center for Gender and Women’s Studies, National Cheng Kung University

Introduction:

Since the 1960s, Gender and Women’s Studies as a cluster of courses or a well-defined programme has been gradually offered in colleges and universities. Its developments are encouraging while worrying. On the one hand, Gender and Women’s Studies have been more or less institutionalized as a unique field of studies with its own students and faculty. On the other hand, its role in social activism has become unclear and its passion for social transformation is sometimes lost in the daily routine of academics that are always juggling to keep themselves alive.

Against this backdrop, the workshop aims to take stock of how far Gender and Women’s Studies has been doing in terms of curricular design, breaking down disciplinary boundaries, and pedagogical innovations in Australia, Mainland China, Hong Kong and Taiwan. In addition, it will also reflect upon the fundamental questions of why and how Gender and Women’s Studies matters to social change, and in what ways it can be made culturally sensitive and emotionally resonant with students at undergraduate as well as postgraduate levels.

Topics to be explored:

  • The impact of institutionalization of Gender and Women’s Studies
  • Pedagogical innovations and curricular developments: eLearning such as blended course, flipped classroom and student-centre approach
  • Ways of addressing the needs of students with diverse disciplinary backgrounds
