HISTORY AND INTRODUCTION
The Gender Studies Programme at the Chinese University of Hong Kong is the first programme on gender studies in tertiary education in Hong Kong. Established in 1997, the Programme is interdisciplinary in nature, with expertise drawn from different academic departments such as psychology, sociology, cultural studies, anthropology, social work, translation, history, and linguistics. This comprehensive interdisciplinary nature makes the programme unique. With that in mind, the Programme offers coursework and research opportunities with an interdisciplinary team of faculty members who are each an internationally recognized expert in their field. Working alongside the full-time staff is a strong network of scholars from various Faculties and Departments, who have served as teachers, supervisors, advisers, and collaborators. Hence, the Programme provides students with a broad-based education in traditional academic disciplines while specializing in gender studies. We are dedicated to contributing to academic knowledge through rigorous research and promoting awareness and interest in gender and sexuality issues on campus and in the wider society through quality education. Since 1998, we have nurtured a vibrant research postgraduate community and attracted students who have won various awards such as the Hong Kong PhD Fellowship. In 2015, we set up the first undergraduate programme in gender studies in Hong Kong.
