The Causes and Consequences of LGBTQ Youth Homelessness: A Case Study of Atlanta, Georgia USA
Date: 29th November, 2017 (Wednesday)
Time: 12:30 - 14:00
Venue: Room 422, Sino Building, The Chinese University of Hong Kong
Speaker: Professor Eric R. Wright,
Chair of the Department of Sociology & 2nd Century Initiative (2CI), Professor of Sociology and Public Health, Georgia State University
Moderator: Professor SUEN Yiu-Tung
Light refreshments will be provided.
Abstract: Over the past decade, youth homeless has increased significantly in many urban areas and emerged as a major social policy challenge in the U.S. Lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer (LGBTQ) youth have been found to be over represented in this population. Using field survey data from the 2015 Atlanta Youth Count and Needs Assessment (AYCNA), Dr. Wright examines the background and experiences of homeless LGBTQ youth to better understand both why they are especially vulnerable and what the consequences of homelessness are for their health and social well-being. The presentation will conclude with a discussion of ideas to improve strategies for engaging and serving homeless LGBTQ youth as well as recommendations for a
multidimensional measurement approach to understand increasingly varied sexual and/or gender identities of urban youth.
Speaker Bio: Eric R. Wright is a 2nd Century Initiative (2CI) Professor of Sociology and Public Health and Chair of the Sociology Department at Georgia State University. He holds a BA in sociology from Lewis & Clark College in Portland, Oregon and an MA and PhD in sociology and human sexuality from Indiana University Bloomington. As a medical sociologist, his research interests center on social and public policy responses to mental health and illness, substance use and addictions, sexual health, and HIV/STI prevention. In addition, Dr. Wright is actively involved in conducting research to understand and ameliorate social and health problems and disparities in minority and other vulnerable communities, including homeless youth and lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer people (LGBTQ). He has extensive experience in working with community organizations as well as local and state government to better understand community needs and improve the effectiveness of social-, health-, and healthcare- related programs and policies.

Beauty Queens and Their College Going Kids: Foreign Domestic Workers in Hong Kong and Women's Empowerment
Date: 15th November, 2017 (Wed)
Time: 12:30 - 2:00pm
Venue: Room 109, Sino Building, The Chinese University of Hong Kong
Language: English
Speaker: Dr. Ju-chen CHEN, Lecturer, Department of Anthropology, The Chinese University of Hong Kong
Moderator: Prof. SONG Jing, Assistant Professor of the Gender Studies Programme, The Chinese University of Hong Kong
Abstract: Foreign domestic workers in Hong Kong are often homogenized, exoticized, and stigmatized as people who live without purpose beyond remitting money home. My research, however, shows that, on Sundays, their only day off, they don’t just idling on the streets but actively juggle between personal chores, association board meetings, birthday parties, church volunteer works, sports events, and beauty pageants. This talk addresses aspirations of the nearly 200,000 Filipino domestic workers in Hong Kong with a focus on active beauty pageant participants. Starting from examining the puzzling phenomenon of Filipino domestic workers “squandering” their time and money in beauty pageants, I will then turn to discussing the seemingly futile efforts of sending their children to colleges. Reflecting upon their pursuits of the beauty queen titles and children’s education attainment, new questions and understanding regarding women’s empowerment dawned on me. I would wrap up this talk by sharing these perspective and concerns.
Speaker's Biography: Dr. Ju-chen CHEN is lecturer at Department of Anthropology, The Chinese University of Hong Kong. Her scholarly interests cover a few topics and geographic locations: female migrant workers in China and their desperate efforts to obtain better houses for their sons; Filipino domestic workers in Hong Kong and the wishes they realize through participation in beauty pageants; and independent musicians and music event organizers in Hong Kong and Taiwan with a focus on their non-accumulative lifestyles. Ju-chen is interested in the relationship between gender and migration and she uses aspiration as the keyword to analyze the pursuits of her various research subjects.

Gender and Employment in Rural China (Book Launch)
Date: 8th November, 2017 (Wed)
Time: 12:30 – 2:00 p.m.
Venue: Room 109, Chen Kou Bun Bldg., CUHK
Language: English
Speaker: Prof. Song Jing, Assistant Professor of the Gender Studies Programme, The Chinese University of Hong Kong
Moderator: Prof. TSENG Hsun-hui, Assistant Professor of the Gender Studies Programme, The Chinese University of Hong Kong
Abstract: With China’s rapid advancements in urbanization and industrialization, there has been significant labor movement away from agriculture in the rural regions. Using four village case studies, the book examines how this restructuring process affects the rural population and how their various perceptions and reactions towards the market reforms have changed along with the employment transition. Given the changes of family life and the diversification of development models, this study illustrates different gendered employment patterns in light of China’s move towards decentralization of its rural economy. The findings suggest mixed trends of multiple job-holding situations and individualized work negotiated within rural families and communities, within which gender gaps and relations are reshaped by the shifting urban-rural divide, the changing local-migrant economic activities, and the varying structures of market risks and private sectors.
Speaker’s Biography: Jing Song is an Assistant Professor in Gender Studies Programme at The Chinese University of Hong Kong. Her research interests include gender and family, work and employment, migration and urbanization, and market transition in China. She has published in China Quarterly, Urban Studies, Eurasian Geography and Economics, Housing Studies, Population, Space and Place, Journal of Sociology, Journal of Comparative Family Studies, Chinese Journal of Sociology etc.

Language and Embodied Sexuality
Time: 12:30-14:0020171004s
Venue: Room 109, Chen Kou Bun Bldg, The Chinese University of Hong Kong
Speaker: Brian W. King, Assistant Professor in English, City University of Hong Kong
Moderator: SUEN Yiu Tung, Assistant Professor, Gender Studies Programme, The Chinese University of Hong Kong
Language: English
Abstract: Embodiment has long been of interest to scholars of Language in Society, and yet theoretical discussions of the inseparability of language and the body have been paradoxically minimal until quite recently. Focusing on the processes by which sexualized bodies are understood, this talk outlines the ways in which language and sexuality scholarship can contribute to knowledge of the connectedness of the social and the soma during social interaction. Bodies are both subjective and social; in one sense we have subjective, embodied knowledge of what it means to live in our sexualized bodies and ‘speak from’ them, and in another sense our bodies are also observed from outside and ‘spoken about’ as sexual. What are the implications for language use, intelligibility and sexual agency? The talk also reviews and builds upon recent scholarship that productively troubles reified notions of bodily stability and fluid identities during traversals of online and offline spaces.
Speaker Bio: Dr. Brian W. King’s primary research interest is language use in communities, in particular discursive performances of gender and sexuality, sexual embodiment, computer-mediated communication, sexuality education, and the social construction of space/place. His work is located within sociolinguistics and discourse analysis. At present he sits on the editorial boards for the journals Gender & Language and Journal of Language and Sexuality and is the Reviews Editor for the journal Language in Society. He recently hosted the 9th International Gender and Language Association Conference (IGALA 9) at City University of Hong Kong, where he has been a faculty member in the Department of English since 2012.
